2017 Ford GT First Look
Nearly fifty years ago, three teams entered Ford GT40 vehicles in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s oldest active sports car endurance race. In the ensuing years, the result of this race has taken on a legendary quality: the top three spots were won by Ford’s legendary GT vehicle, in a race that was actually the first time that an American car had won the race. Now, Ford has brought back the GT with production slated to begin for the 2017 model year, and we received a first look at this awesome supercar at this week’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit. So, let’s take a quick look at the 2017 Ford GT, shall we?
The Basics: The fully reimagined 2017 Ford GT receives fully-active aerodynamics and a carbon fiber composition that, according to Ford, will let it “exhibit one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car.” Buttressed wings slide off of the roof to greet the rear fenders, proving that, underneath the striking blue skin, there’s a true racer underneath. Ford has mentioned that they expect to enter this in the 2016 Le Mans race and, if history is any indication, it will probably do quite well.
The Powertrain: Previous generations of the GT have generally employed a supercharged V8 under the hood, but the latest edition of Ford’s iconic supercar is now going in a different direction. Namely, it’s going in an EcoBoost direction. Yes, Ford’s industry-defining lineup of powertrains will get its supercar debut by way of a twin-turbocharged 3.5L EcoBoost V6 that has been promised to release over 600 horsepower and close to 500 pound-feet of torque. It looks like it will be using a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In short, it will be extremely fast.
The Interior: The 2017 Ford GT features a stunning two-person cockpit situated just ahead of the dual central exhaust outlets, which are set between the rear fenders. The digital gauge cluster is set next to a touch-screen display offering the brand new Sync 3 infotainment system. A center panel features the starter button and transmission selectors, which channel through the paddle shifter set on the attractive and functional steering wheel. It’s a clean, efficient and performance-minded interior cabin.
